Applied Case: The Endless Battle

After The Future Has Ended.

A long Pokémon battle is still a Pokémon battle.

Stall exists. Defensive teams exist. Players preserve resources, exhaust opposing PP, recover health, switch repeatedly, establish hazards, remove hazards, and occasionally spend enough time staring at a Blissey that they begin to understand its private ambitions.

Length alone tells us very little.

A battle can run for hundreds of turns while remaining alive as a game. Positions change. Resources disappear. Mistakes accumulate. Risks move. One player approaches victory while another searches for a route back.

The clock advances because the field advances.

An Endless Battle is different.

The turns continue. The future does not.

Funbro.

Competitive Pokémon eventually discovered a machine for keeping a battle alive after ordinary resolution had been removed from it.

The most famous version became known as Funbro.

The ingredients varied, but the structure was simple.

The remaining reliable exit was outside the battle:

Forfeit.

Duration != Future.

This is an unusually clean demonstration of the difference between duration and continuance.

A system does not acquire a richer future by surviving another unit of time.

Something can persist while its reachable future collapses.

A bureaucracy can continue processing forms after it has lost the capacity to correct the process.

An institution can reproduce itself indefinitely while becoming unable to learn.

A relationship can continue through ritual repetition after the paths that once gave the relationship development, trust, or repair have disappeared.

A civilization can remain extremely busy while narrowing toward the same failures.

A Pokémon battle can continue after the battle has stopped going anywhere.

The Endless Battle preserves states.

It destroys development among them.

The structure has approached:

Then:

Then:

Then:

The local transitions remain real.

The global field has become a loop.

This is why Modal Path Ethics cannot identify continuance with persistence.

The question is always what the extant can still become.

The Perfectly Preserved Corpse of a Game.

Funbro is almost offensively useful to Modal Path Ethics because he preserves so much.

From a sufficiently stupid measurement system, the game is doing incredibly well.

Uptime is excellent.

The problem is that the thing being preserved was a game, and a game is constituted partly by what can happen next.

Its state cannot be understood as an inventory of surviving objects.

A position exists through its available transformations. A chess position whose pieces remain perfectly preserved while no legal play can ever escape the same forced cycle has lost something that counting the pieces will never reveal.

Funbro demonstrates the same structure with a pink animal holding a berry.

It preserves the material of play while contracting the path of play.

Smogon Attempts to Ban Infinity.

Smogon eventually adopted an Endless Battle Clause.

The early problem appeared tractable enough. Identify the known combinations capable of producing infinite battles, prohibit them, return everyone to Pokémon.

Then players found other constructions. The exact machinery shifted.

Heal Pulse could be replaced. Different methods could restore resources.

Different trapping structures could reproduce the same underlying state.

The object was never one particular Slowbro moveset.

It was the relation:

A player intentionally creates a renewable state from which ordinary battle resolution can no longer be reached.

This produced a familiar governance problem.

Showdown had discovered infinity.

The rules committee now had to specify which infinities counted.

Anything Goes.

Then Mega Rayquaza happened.

Mega Rayquaza proved powerful enough that Smogon eventually removed it from Ubers.

That decision changed what Ubers was understood to be.

Ubers could no longer function only as the place where Pokémon banned from ordinary tiers went. If Ubers itself required protection from something, then it was also a playable field with conditions worth preserving.

A new format appeared above it:

Anything Goes

The title was close to literal.

Many restrictions governing ordinary competitive Pokémon disappeared.

Extremely powerful Pokémon were welcome.

Strategies considered unacceptable elsewhere were welcome.

Normal team-building constraints could be discarded.

The outer boundary had been pushed almost as far as competitive Pokémon could push it.

One important restriction remained.

Endless Battle Clause

Anything Goes can tolerate catastrophic imbalance.

It can tolerate absurdity.

It can tolerate repetition, degeneracy, luck, ugly strategies, and objects so powerful that another tier created this place specifically to get them out of the house.

It cannot tolerate the destruction of playable termination.

Even the format built around radical permission still needs the battle to retain a path toward becoming something other than itself.

The Exit Is Outside.

There is an obvious objection.

The Endless Battle therefore does have a terminal state.

This is true in exactly the wrong way.

Forfeit does not resolve the trapped field internally.

It abandons it.

Once the Endless Battle has been established, the losing player's relevant possibility space has collapsed from the ordinary grammar of competitive Pokémon

toward:

or

The game still offers buttons.

The field has lost play.

This gives Endless Battle Clause a stronger justification than ordinary balance rules. A balance rule protects the quality of competition inside the game.

Endless Battle Clause protects the existence of an internal path through the game.

A Healthy Cycle Still Has an Outside.

Cycles themselves are not the problem.

Most living systems depend on recurrence.

A healthy heart spends an entire life doing something suspiciously repetitive.

Pokémon itself depends on cycles: switching, recovery, weather, regeneration, resource management, repeated positional structures.

Recurrence becomes capture when the cycle closes access to the wider field.

A healthy cycle returns to a familiar state while retaining meaningful exits from it.

An Endless Battle returns because the exits have been removed.

Repetition can maintain a field.

Repetition can also become the structure that prevents the field from changing.

The Clause Is Also Trapped Here.

Endless Battle Clause has itself required continued revision.

A rule written around one known infinite machine encounters another.

The implementation becomes more sophisticated.

Players discover another edge condition.

The field develops new ways of recognizing stale states, renewable resources, forced cycles, and responsibility for creating them.

Then someone builds a stranger loop.

The rule returns.

This is not evidence that the rule failed.

It is evidence that ending is a property of the whole transition field rather than an object easily located in one move, item, Pokémon, or line of code.

A player can assemble nontermination from components that are harmless alone.

The rule therefore has to keep asking what the battle has become.

So does the article.

Ruling.

The Endless Battle is a field with enormous duration and almost no future.

It exposes a basic error in any account of preservation that counts survival without asking what survival still permits.

Everything can remain present while reachability collapses.

Every component can continue functioning while the system they compose loses its capacity to progress.

Every turn can be legal while the path produced by those turns has become a trap.

This is why even Anything Goes needs Endless Battle Clause.

The deepest boundary of a playable field is not balance, or fairness, or elegance.

It is the preservation of enough internal reachability for play to remain capable of becoming something else.
