UCLA researchers studying calendar aging found that many next-generation metal-anode batteries can lose serious capacity while doing absolutely nothing at all. In one zinc-battery setup, a conventional electrolyte lost more than a third of its capacity after a single idle day. By redesigning the electrolyte, the team cut that loss to less than 1.5% after 24 hours while still keeping stable cycling. Rest has become an engineering state. Battery design no longer has to optimize only charging and discharging. It can also optimize the long, uneventful stretch where the battery is just sitting there, aging with malicious intent.
The battery does nothing better now.
